Hurricane Dorian battered the Bahamas with—at times—sustained winds of 185 mph. As it heads for the southeast, wind damage is still a big concern. Chris Letchford, the head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, is a global wind engineering expert. His many research projects have included how wind and ocean waves interact and how structures withstand wind. Professor Letchford is available to speak about the destructive nature of wind of this strength, and how structures can be built to resist the damaging power of extreme wind.
