Newswise — New York University will host a “An Evening of Denial,” a panel discussion centering on the rejection of scientific knowledge, on Mon., Nov. 4, 5-6:30 p.m. at NYU’s Global Center for Academic and Spiritual Life, Colloquium Room (5th Floor) (238 Thompson St. [betw. West 3rd St. and Washington Sq. South]).
The event, hosted by NYU’s Department of Environmental Studies, is free and open to the public.
A recent Pew Research Center survey found that while most Americans say scientific methods generally produce accurate conclusions, more than one-third believe science can be “manipulated to produce a desired conclusion.” This finding is coupled with a poll from the National Surveys on Energy and Environment that shows nearly 30 percent of Americans don’t think or are not sure there is “solid evidence” of global warming.
Against this backdrop of public sentiment on science, “An Evening of Denial” will consider the nature and impact of these perceptions. It will feature Kert Davies, founder and director of Climate Investigations Center and chief architect of the Greenpeace web project ExxonSecrets, as well as investigative journalist Carey Gillam, author of Whitewash: The Story of a Weed Killer, Cancer, and the Corruption of Science, and Tyrone Hayes, a professor of integrative biology at the University of California at Berkeley who has studied the health impact of pesticides. The session will be moderated by Jennifer Jacquet, a professor in NYU’s Department of Environmental Studies.
