Newswise — CHICAGO (December 2, 2019): Beth H. Sutton, MD, FACS, was recently elected Chair of the Board of Regents of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) during the College’s Clinical Congress 2019, held in San Francisco, October 27-31.
A general surgeon in private practice in Wichita Falls, Texas, Dr. Sutton has been a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) since 1984. As Board of Regents Chair, Dr. Sutton will work closely with ACS Executive Director David B. Hoyt, MD, FACS, and Board of Regents Vice-Chair L. Scott Levin, MD, FACS. She will chair the Regents’ Finance and Executive Committees. The College’s 23-member Board of Regents formulates policy and is ultimately responsible for managing the affairs of the College. The Board members’ diversity and variety of experiences and interests enable the Regents to represent views related to myriad issues in contemporary surgery.
Dr. Sutton has held several leadership roles within the ACS. She has been a member of the Board of Regents since 2012 and served on the Board of Governors Executive Committee (2008–2010) and as a Governor at-Large from the North Texas Chapter (2004–2010). At present, she serves on the ACS Committee on Healthcare Disparities, the Advisory Council for General Surgery, the Committee on Preceptorship for Practicing Surgeons, and the Committee on Professional Opportunities for Senior Members. She is also a liaison to the Injury Prevention Committee of the ACS Committee on Trauma and the Advisory Council for General Surgery. Dr. Sutton also is a past-president of the Texas Surgical Society (2007) and the Association of Women Surgeons (1999).
Dr. Sutton is a member of the Western Surgical Association, American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, American Thyroid Association, Southwestern Surgical Congress, Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, Southern Surgical Association, Texas Medical Association, and the Wichita County Medical Society. She has been named a Distinguished Alumna in General Surgery, Scott and White Memorial Hospital Graduate Medical Education Program (2008), and selected for Best Doctors in America (1996-present).
Dr. Sutton earned her Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Baylor University in 1972 and her Doctor of Medicine from Baylor College of Medicine in 1976. She completed an internship in surgery at St. Paul Hospital, Dallas, Texas, followed by a residency in general surgery at Scott and White Memorial Hospital, Temple, Texas.
“FACS” designates that a surgeon is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
