Rutgers Polling Expert Available to Discuss the Future of Polling

New Brunswick, N.J. – Rutgers pollster Ashley Koning is available to comment on changes affecting the polling industry, how the changes help us understand the failure of nationwide polls to predict the outcome of the 2016 presidential election, and how voters can interpret poll results leading into the 2020 election.

“Over the past two decades, participation in public polling has dropped precipitously,” Koning said. “During the 2016 election cycle only six percent of respondents agreed to participate in telephone surveys. To gather hundreds of complete interviews, pollsters had to make tens of thousands of phone calls. Pollsters are now turning to online surveys as a more cost and time-efficient way to survey the public – but the ability of online surveys to obtain truly representative responses is hotly debated.”

Koning discusses these and other questions in this video.

Koning is an expert in American public opinion, survey design, polling trends, and mass political behavior. She is an assistant research professor at Rutgers University’s Eagleton Institute of Politics and the director of the institute’s Center for Public Interest Polling.
