Parents and teachers are navigating unchartered territory as students are mandated to learn online while sheltering at home. 

"Rapid movement to online learning does not come without concerns and challenges for both educators and parents," says Nicol Howard, professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning at the University of Redlands. "What we know is that not every educator or parent is excited and/or prepared for the shift.

"For years, educators have requested more targeted educational technology-related program development that demonstrates best pedagogical practices for teaching and learning digitally. Parents have also asked for similar support from their districts. While there are forward-thinking districts who have invested in educator and parent support, we are still seeing digital inequities in some rural and lower socioeconomic communities."

Dr. Howard is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning at the University of Redlands. Her research examines the potential impact of encouragement and support on achievement for underrepresented K12 students, especially when faced with stereotypes and misinformed perceptions related to their academic ability.
