Newswise — A graduate student who will work with theorists at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility to better understand subatomic particles has received a supplemental research award from the DOE Office of Science Graduate Student Research Program.
Keegan Hale Sherman is one of 52 awardees nationwide to receive the award. He is pursuing his Ph.D. in nuclear physics at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. At Jefferson Lab, Sherman will be working with a staff scientist on developing the formalism and numerical technology to study the structure of hadronic resonances using lattice QCD.
“These graduate student awards help prepare new scientists for STEM careers that are vitally important to the DOE mission and the nation’s economy,” said Secretary of Energy Dan Brouillette. “We are proud of the accomplishments of these outstanding awardees and look forward to seeing what they achieve in the years to come. They represent the future leadership and innovation that will allow American science and engineering to excel in the 21st century.”
DOE recently announced program awardees from 43 different U.S. universities who are carrying out part of their doctoral dissertation/thesis research in the physical sciences at 12 DOE national laboratories/facilities. The goal of program is to prepare graduate students for STEM careers critically important to the DOE Office of Science mission. All of these research projects address scientific challenges central to Office of Science mission areas across its six research programs.
The DOE Office of Science Graduate Student Research Program research projects are expected to advance the graduate awardee’s overall doctoral thesis while providing access to the expertise, resources, and capabilities available at the DOE laboratories/facilities. Awardees are eligible to receive a monthly stipend for general living expenses while at the host DOE laboratory/facility during the award period. They may also receive funds for travel between their host DOE facility and home institution.
