New Brunswick, N.J. (Nov. 5, 2020) – Rutgers University–New Brunswick climatologist David A. Robinson is available for interviews on the record high snow cover over North America in October 2020.

Robinson oversees the Rutgers University Global Snow Lab, which includes an internationally recognized database of Northern Hemisphere snow extent throughout the satellite era. Most of his published research has focused on hemispheric and regional snow cover dynamics and interactions of snow cover with other climate elements.

“The extent of snow cover over North America last month was the greatest for October since 1967, when record-keeping began,” said Robinson, New Jersey State Climatologist and a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Geography in the School of Arts and Sciences. “The snow cover extent was much closer to average in Eurasia. Thus, the Northern Hemisphere as a whole, while averaging above normal, did not come close to a record.”

“The record October snow cover over the United States has retreated, though cold air coming in this weekend may generate new cover in the West,” Robinson said. “Meanwhile a notable negative anomaly of cover has developed over western Eurasia.”
