Newswise — March 23, 2021 – Whether you’re a baseball player snacking on sunflower seeds or you’re on a hike and reach into a bag of trail mix, you eat more seeds than you probably think! This Sustainable, Secure Food blog explores the many different types of edible seeds. This blog is part of the 2021 Seed Week celebration, organized by the Crop Science Society of America

Blogger Christine Bradish explains, “would it surprise you to learn that the nutrients in seeds are also healthy and tasty? Like a mother’s milk, a seed can be a dense source of protein, lipids, and carbohydrates. Farmers grow and harvest these seeds for our consumption.”

Some common seeds we eat include:

  • Legumes. Legumes hold their seeds in pods. Beans, chickpeas, lentils, and peanuts are all legumes. True “nuts” are seeds contained in a hard shell.
  • Pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds.
  • Fruits and vegetables. Many of these foods, such as bananas, contain seeds in them that are so small, we don’t even realize we’re eating them.
