Virginia Mason Honored As ‘Most Wired’ For Seventh Straight Year

Newswise — SEATTLE – (Nov. 2, 2018) Virginia Mason Medical Center has received the 2018 Most Wired award, which goes to hospitals and health systems across the nation that are on the forefront of using foundational and new information technology (IT) to improve the delivery of care.

This marks the seventh straight year Virginia Mason has received the award, announced today by the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME).

“We are honored to again be designated as a Most Wired medical center,” said Ellen Dowling, vice president and chief information officer, Virginia Mason. “The award recognizes the excellent work of the IT and operations teams and their collaborative support of our clinicians and their patients.”

Virginia Mason’s strategic IT applications include a comprehensive inpatient and outpatient electronic health record with embedded clinical decision support; medical device integration with the electronic health record; a barcode system for safely administering medications; online resources for managing the health of defined populations; industry leading information security and privacy programs; and a secure online patient portal called MyVirginiaMason. The portal enables patients to schedule appointments; renew prescriptions; send messages to their providers; view their lab results; and review clinic notes. The online portal logged more than 7.7 million page views between Jan. 1 and Oct. 28 this year alone.

The Most Wired survey identified two key areas that emerged nationally this year: the use of foundational technologies that facilitate integration, interoperability, security and disaster recovery; and the use of transformational technologies to support population health management, value-based care, patient engagement and telehealth. The most successful organizations not only adopt technology but apply it strategically to achieve great outcomes, according to an analysis of Most Wired survey results by CHIME.
