It’s that time of year when things go bump in the night. Halloween—a day when people love to scare each other—is Wednesday. Horror writer and CU Boulder English Professor Stephen Graham Jones can break down why we like to be scared and discuss the mythology of zombies, werewolves, haunted houses and more.

Jones, who has written many horror books, delivered a public talk on zombies earlier this month. He traces the satisfying rush that comes with fear to the early days of humanity, saying we are still hardwired to expect the threat of a predator or attack.

“It gives us the sense that we’re not safe. And though that feels unsettling in one sense in another sense it makes us feel more human.”
