Newswise — New York University’s Institute for Public Knowledge (IPK) will host a symposium on the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, a one-day event that will consider the issues of equal pay, field conditions, coaching, and medical attention along with the future of women’s soccer, on Thurs., May 16, 1:30 p.m.-7 p.m. (20 Cooper Square [between 5th and 6th Streets], 5th Floor).
The 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup opens June 7 in France, with the host nation taking on South Korea.
In a series of panels, which include “Women and Coaching,” “Women and the Global Game,” “Burn It All Down, Hot Take,” and “How to Watch this Year’s World Cup,” the symposium will address the progress, inequities, and promise of women’s soccer.
Speakers include: Joshua Nadel and Brenda Elsey, co-authors of Futbolera: A History of Women and Sports in Latin America, Andrew Helms, ESPN’s “30 for 30,” Stephanie Yang, the Athletic, Kimberly Wyant, NYU’s men’s soccer coach, NYU sociologist Eric Klinenberg, director of the Institute for Public Knowledge, and Courtney Carroll, executive producer of Coach, a 25-min. film that will be shown as part of the symposium.
