Newswise — June 22, 2020 - When it comes to crop yield, most of us are concerned with what it will look like at harvest time. For those growing crops above ground, number and quality of flowers help predict the yield. The June 22nd Sustainable, Secure Food blog explores how the use of technology such as ground penetrating radar can help predict yields for tuber crops, which grow underground.

Cassava is an essential crop for parts of the world that will be most affected by climate change. It’s also drought tolerant. “This is why it is urgent that we work to find cassava varieties that mature more quickly,” says blogger Illiyana Dobreva. “This will reduce the time to harvest, and potentially increase a farmer’s profitability and sustainability.”

To help predict the yield of cassava, scientists use technology that can ‘see’ underground such as ground penetrating radar. The technology is quick, inexpensive, and non-destructive to the crop while taking measurements.
