How online gaming is combatting against effects of social isolation, overuse of social media

New Brunswick, N.J. (Apr. 9, 2020) – Rutgers expert Michael Fay, an expert in gaming and esports, is available to discuss the increased use of online gaming during COVID-19 quarantine, and its positive impact in combatting social isolation and overuse of social media.

"Video games are different from other digital media platforms in this time of physical isolation,” Fay said.

“Social media use and excessive video streaming can isolate us, leading to increased anxiety and depression. But video games and esports connect us through collaboration. Games like Animal Crossing, Minecraft, Fortnite and League of Legends offer the opportunity to work together toward a common goal, and a collaborative way for those stuck at home to maintain connections with community and loved ones. It allows them to virtually escape from home without putting their health at risk. This makes video games a powerful force in fighting the destructive psychological effects of isolation."

Fay, an expert in esports and gaming culture, is the esports center director for an upcoming LAN gaming center at Rutgers–New Brunswick.
