Fact Check By: Craig Jones, Newswise

Truthfulness: Half True

Claim:

Californian dies hours after getting COVID-19 vaccine, prompting probe

Claim Publisher and Date: New York Post on 2021-01-23

A Northern California man died on January 21st, several hours after receiving a dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, according to Placer County Public Health and the Placer County Sheriff's Office.  It should be said that the man previously tested positive for the coronavirus in late December. There is no evidence that the vaccine was the cause of death.

The New York Post published an article with the following headline on January 23, 2021: Californian dies hours after getting COVID-19 vaccine, prompting probe. Although this is true, readers who read this headline without reading the entire article could miss the important fact that the man was diagnosed with COVID-19 weeks before his vaccination. There are multiple local, state, and federal agencies actively investigating this case, according to the Sheriff's office. There is no evidence that the vaccine given contributed to the man's death. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that individuals who have already had COVID and fully recovered should still get vaccinated.

Thomas Russo, MD, professor and chief, Division of Infectious Diseases, Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo has this to say...

“Presently, the cause of death in this case is unclear and one should not assume it was vaccine related. Additional potential causes include a COVID-19 related complication (e.g. myocarditis) or an unrelated health condition. Regardless, at this time, the benefits of vaccination far outweigh potential risks for eligible priority groups.”
