Recently introduced legislation hopes to boost industry competition by requiring social network companies like Facebook to make user data portable to other platforms. But a just released report by NYU Law’s Engelberg Center on Innovation Law & Policy concludes that this likely won’t work.  

In their whitepaper “Data Portability and Platform Competition: Is User Data Exported From Facebook Actually Useful to Competitors?”, the authors suggest that data portability is not necessarily a viable path for competition and innovation.
