Juergen Hahn, Department Head of Biomedical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, is a trailblazer in the use of big data methods to improve the diagnosis and treatment of Autism. His research focuses on the use of machine-learning algorithms to analyze complex biological and biomedical systems. He previously developed a physiological test for autism after discovering patterns with certain metabolites in the blood that can accurately predict diagnosis. He is applying that same approach to other areas of autism research including correlating conditions and assessing the effectiveness of possible medical treatments.

Douglas Hales is an Associate Dean and Professor of Supply Chain Management at the University of Rhode Island. His primary teaching expertise is Global Supply Chain Management and Lean Six Sigma. His research interests include Global Port Competitiveness and Applied Process Improvement. 

Hales has more than 20 years of operational and supply chain management experience for the U. S. Marine Corps as well as the plastics and construction industries. He can speak to the impact of U. S. imposed tariffs on Chinese goods and U. S. goods in many industries. He can discuss the delay between the tariffs and the arrival of goods being shipped to the U.S. and what consumers can expect, in terms of the timing of price hikes on goods purchased by Americans. He can discuss the “cold chain,” agricultural goods, electronics and commodities in general that ship by container vessel.

Hales is a special issue co-editor for the Transportation Journal on Seaport Competition for 2018 and 2019, as well as the past Program Chair of the Northeast Decision Sciences Institute. He is also the incoming President of the Northeast Decision Sciences Institute, beginning July 1, 2019.

Georgia Hall, Ph.D., is director of the National Institute on Out-of-School Time (NIOST) and associate director of the Wellesley Centers for Women. Hall specializes in research and evaluation on youth development programs, settings, and learning experiences. Her work has focused extensively on strategies to improve out-of-school time program quality along with investigations of summer learning programs and STEM initiatives for girls. Hall serves as principal investigator on several multi-year research projects and is a frequent presenter at national conferences, seminars, and meetings.

Hall’s work has included management of many types of large research and technical assistance projects including supervising logistics, development and execution of fieldwork and data collection systems, data processing, analysis, and reporting, and overall communication and collaboration with project partners and funders.

Sam Handwerger, CPA, is a full-time Lecturer in the department, and is a University of Maryland undergraduate accounting alumnus. He also holds a Master of Science in Taxation degree from the University of Baltimore. Handwerger was a Senior Tax Researcher with EY in New York City and later led the Tax Planning and Preparation Departments of the CPA firm Handwerger, Cardegna, Funkhouser & Lurman. In 1996, he was awarded the Governor’s Volunteer of the year award in the State of Maryland for financial and management advisement to non-profit organizations. Before joining the Smith School on a full-time basis, Handwerger held adjunct positions at the Johns Hopkins University School of Business and the University of Baltimore Law School.

Handwerger's professional accomplishments includes giving professional expert testimony in various legal cases involving accounting and tax issues as well as for the now landmark decision in Maryland Tax Court, Har Sinai West v. Comptroller. Further, in 2013 Handwerger orchestrated a "no-change" IRS audit in Tax Court involving a $30.0 million assessment, Docket 28353-12.

I have almost 40 years of experience in the field of alcoholism research, with much of my work focusing on the molecular sites and mechanisms of alcohol action in brain. My group has extensive experience with mouse behavioral models of alcohol consumption and dependence and was involved in some of the initial studies of the neuroimmune basis of alcohol dependence. Profiling brain gene expression is key to understanding addiction, and we were among the first to study the human brain transcriptome. We have implemented microRNA profiling and next-generation sequencing to extend our studies of molecular remodeling by alcohol in human and mouse brain. We study the genetic overlap in human alcoholics and animal models of alcohol dependence and examine the neurobiological systems involved. My research encompasses the fields of genomics, behavior, systems biology, and bioinformatics. Overall, my work has combined functional, structural, behavioral, and genomic approaches to define sites of alcohol action. Currently, I am Associate Director of the Waggoner Center for Alcohol and Addiction Research at The University of Texas at Austin and previously served as Director for 20 years. I am also the Consortium Director for the Integrative Neuroscience Initiative on Alcoholism (INIA)-Neuroimmune, where our goal is to identify and test candidate drugs that may be repurposed to treat alcohol use disorders. 


Dr. Josh Harris is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery in orthopedic sports medicine. He completed his medical training and a residency in orthopedic surgery at Ohio State University College of Medicine. He also completed a fellowship in Orthopedic Surgery Sports Medicine at Rush University Medical Center. His main clinical focus is on sports injury and arthroscopic surgery for the treatment of various sports-related injuries. Harris conducts research in orthopedic sports medicine and hip preservation.
Harris serves as the team physician of the Houston Ballet, and the consulting physician of Rice University Athletics.

Dr Katy Hayward is one of the leading political sociologists on the island of Ireland, and is a Reader in Sociology, and Senior Research Fellow at the Senator George J. Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice at Queen’s University Belfast. Dr Hayward’s research focuses on conflict/post-conflict transitions and is actively interdisciplinary, traversing fields of border studies, conflict studies, European studies, and Irish studies. This means that she is particularly well-placed to speak about the implications of Brexit for the island of Ireland, and Northern Ireland in particular, European integration, political violence, and the application of discourse analysis.

Dr. Dean Headley is an Emeritus Professor in the W. Frank Barton School of Business, at Wichita State University.  He received his Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University in services marketing and statistics (1989).  Dean is a native of Kansas, receiving his undergraduate business degree from Emporia State University (1970). He also has a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the University of Oklahoma (1974) and an MBA from Wichita State University (1982). 
Before returning for his initial graduate work, Dean worked in the area of consumer credit with Phillips Petroleum Company in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.  After receiving his initial graduate degree in 1974, he worked as an HMO developer in Oklahoma, Health Systems Agency Planning Director in Wichita, and medical school Outreach Director and physician recruiter for K.U. School of Medicine in Wichita.  Prior to returning to academia to earn his doctorate, Dean taught in and chaired the Department of Business at Newman University in Wichita (1982 to 1985).  In 1987 he taught in the College of Health Professions at WSU and in 1988 he joined the Barton School faculty. Until his retirement in May 2018, Dean was a fulltime faculty in the Barton School at Wichita State serving for 30 years.  Dr. Headley taught courses in marketing research and services marketing at WSU.

His research on airline quality over the past 29 years has garnered national and international attention for the University via appearances on Good Morning America, the TODAY Show, ABC 20/20, CNN and Fox network news, local television news, articles in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, USA Today, Business Week, Forbes, Reader’s Digest, the Wichita Eagle, Wichita Business Journal, as well as other major electronic and print news outlets.  His work with quality measurement is recognized by both academics and the business community as a benchmark in the measurement of service quality for the commercial airline industry.

Cheryl Healton, DrPH, is dean of the College of Global Public Health and professor of public health policy and management at New York University.  A public health leader and scholar, Healton has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers and special reports on topics including HIV/AIDS, the opioid crisis, public health education, health policy, substance abuse, and tobacco. 

Healton was the founding president and CEO of Legacy (now Truth Initiative), a national foundation dedicated to tobacco control created by the tobacco industry’s Master Settlement Agreement. Healton worked to further the foundation’s mission: to build a world where young people reject tobacco and anyone can quit. During her time with Legacy, Healton guided the national youth tobacco prevention counter-marketing campaign, truth®, which has been credited with reducing youth smoking prevalence to near record lows. 

Healton is currently focused on what lessons can be learned from the tobacco industry’s Master Settlement Agreement and applied to other public health issues, including opioids, gun violence, obesity, and global warming.

Hedrick received her B.S. in Biology from Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 1984. She received her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Wake Forest University School of Medicine in 1992, where she performed her graduate research on LDL cholesterol metabolism in the laboratory of Dr Lawrence Rudel. From 1992 to 1995, she performed her postdoctoral research on HDL metabolism in the laboratory of Dr Aldons ‘Jake’ Lusis at UCLA. From 1995 to 1999, she worked as a junior faculty member in the Division of Cardiology at UCLA, where her research focused on inflammation and endothelial function. From 2000 to 2009, Dr. Hedrick worked as a professor in the Departments of Pharmacology, Medicine, and Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. In 2009, Dr. Hedrick was awarded the Harrison Chair of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics at the University of Virginia. Dr. Hedrick joined the faculty of LJI in the Division of Inflammation Biology in 2009.

Dr. Hedrick currently serves on the NHLBI Vascular Cellular Molecular Biology Review Committee, the AAI Committee for the Status of Women, and the American Heart Association ATVB Council Leadership Committee. She is also a Fellow of the American Heart Association. Recent honors received by Dr. Hedrick include the ATVB Vascular Biology Special Recognition Award, from the American Heart Association in 2013; the Jeffrey M. Hoeg Arteriosclerosis Thrombosis and Vascular Biology Award for Basic Science and Clinical Research from the American Heart Association in 2014; and the Arteriosclerosis Thrombosis and Vascular Biology Mentor of Women Award from the American Heart Association in 2015.

James Hendler

James Hendler, the Director of the Institute for Data Exploration and Applications (IDEA) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is an expert in artificial intelligence and one of the originators of the “Semantic Web.” Hendler currently serves as the chair of the U.S. Technology Policy Committee for the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) which includes subcommittees on voting and cybersecurity. He is a former member of the U.S. Air Force Science Advisory Board, the former chief scientist of the Information Systems Office at the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and a recipient of the U.S. Air Force Exceptional Civilian Service Medal. In addition to numerous other policymakers and government agencies, including the Department of Defense, Hendler has worked with the White House on the development of, the U.S. government’s open data site, as an “Internet Web Expert.” In 2010, Hendler was named one of the 20 most innovative professors in America by Playboy magazine

Roy Herbst, MD, PhD

Dr. Herbst’s primary mission is the enhanced integration of clinical, laboratory, and research programs to bring new treatments to cancer patients. He has led the Phase I development of several of the new generation of targeted agents for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), including gefitinib, erlotinib, cetuximab, and bevacizumab. More recently, he participated in the successful registration of pembrolizumab for the treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer, following the successful Yale-led KEYNOTE 10 study of the immune therapy drug commonly used to treat other cancers. He was co-leader for the BATTLE-1 clinical trial program, co-leads the subsequent BATTLE-2 clinical trial program, and served as a Co-program Leader of the Developmental Therapeutics Program for the YCC Support Grant. Dr. Herbst’s laboratory work is focused on immunotherapy angiogenesis; dual epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)/vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR) inhibition in NSCLC, and targeting KRAS-activated pathways. More recently, he has explored predictive biomarkers for the use of immunotherapy agents. This work has been translated from the preclinical to clinical setting in multiple Phase II and III studies which he has led.

After earning a B.S. and M.S. degree from Yale University, Dr. Herbst earned his M.D. at Cornell University Medical College and his Ph.D. in molecular cell biology at The Rockefeller University in New York City, New York. His postgraduate training included an internship and residency in medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. His clinical fellowships in medicine and hematology were completed at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, respectively. Subsequently, Dr. Herbst completed a M.S. degree in clinical translational research at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Dr. Herbst is an author or co-author of more than 275 publications, including peer-reviewed journal articles, abstracts, and book chapters. His work has been published in many prominent journals, such as the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Clinical Cancer Research, Lancet, the New England Journal of Medicine, and Nature. His abstracts have been presented at the annual meetings of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), the World Conference on Lung Cancer, the Society of Nuclear Medicine Conference, and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer.

Dr. Herbst was a member of the National Cancer Policy Forum (1998-2014) for which he organized an Institute of Medicine meeting focused on policy issues in personalized medicine. He is a member of ASCO and, as a member of AACR, he chairs the Tobacco Task Force. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and an elected member of the Association of American Physicians. Dr. Herbst is also a member of the medical advisory committee for the Lung Cancer Research Foundation and chair of the communications committee for ASCO and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer.

He is currently the Vice Chair for Developmental Therapeutics for the Southwestern Oncology Group (SWOG) Lung Committee, Principal Investigator of the SWOG 0819 trial, and steering committee chair for the Lung Master Protocol (Lung MAP). Dr. Herbst was awarded the 2010 Waun Ki Hong Award for Excellence in Team Science by the Division of Cancer Medicine, UT-MDACC. The Alvin S. Slotnick Lecture Award for notable contributions to lung cancer research was bestowed upon him by Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center in 2014. That same year, the Bonnie Addario Foundation honored him with the Annual Addario Lectureship Award and the Bonnie J. Addario Excellence in Collaboration and Innovation Award. In 2015, the Clinical Research Forum presented his project “Predictive Correlates of Response to the Anti-PD-L1 Antibody MPDL3280A in Cancer Patients” its top Clinical Research Achievement Award in the United States for 2015. For his lifetime achievement in scientific contributions to thoracic cancer research, Herbst was awarded the 2016 Paul A. Bunn, Jr. Scientific Award by the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer at IASLC 17th World Conference on Lung Cancer in Vienna, Austria. His work has been funded by ASCO, AACR, the United States Department of Defense, and the National Cancer Institute. In 2015, his team at Yale was awarded a lung cancer SPORE by the NCI, and he serves as a principal investigator for the AACR/ Stand Up to Cancer Dream Team grant.

Luis Rafael Herrera-Estrella is the President's Distinguished Professor of Plant Genomics and the Director for the Center for Functional Genomics of Abiotic Stress in the Department of Plant and Soil Science at Texas Tech University's College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources. Dr. Herrera-Estrella came to Texas Tech in 2018 thanks to a grant from the State of Texas Governor's University Research Initiative (GURI). He leads a team in the Center that examines how plants adapt to thrive in the presence of environmental stresses such as extreme heat and cold, drought and in the presence of brackish water sources. Herrera-Estrella is known and respected worldwide for his work in cotton genomics, having earned the distinction in 2015 as one of the 100 most influential people in biotechnology by Scientific American. He previously served as the director and full professor of the National Laboratory of Genomics for Biodiversity (LANGEBIO) in Guanajuato, Mexico, where remains a professor emeritus. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms that allow plants to cope with a continuously changing environment. In particular, he has studied the two fundamental processes of molecular responses to light as a source of energy and a developmental signal, and nutrient availability. Herrera-Estrella was able to eventually identify DNA regulatory elements that allow plants to activate genes in response to light stimuli and the protein sequence present in many corresponding gene products that ultimately allow participation in the photosynthesis process. A holder of 15 patents, Herrera-Estrella has published more than 180 research papers and 47 book chapters and other reviews while having delivered more than 200 presentations on his work. He served as a senior international research scholar at the Howard Hughes Biomedical Institute from 2012 to 2017 and earned the Dr. Luis Federico Leloir Award in 2012 from the Argentinian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. Herrera-Estrella earned his doctoral and postdoctoral degrees in genetics from the State University of Ghent, Belgium. He received his master’s degree in genetics and molecular biology from the Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados del Instituto Politécnico Nacional, and his bachelor’s degree from Escuela Nacional de Ciencias Biológicas Instituto Politécnico Nacional.

Through personal history with lung cancer, Bonnie Addario is her mother, she has had hands-on experience as a caregiver as it relates to lung cancer the disease, treatments, the emotional and physical experience along with experience through survivorship. 

She has developed multiple patient education programs and educational publications that have reach in 143 countries around the world. In her role, she directly touches patients, caregivers, physicians, nurses, and industry professionals. She attends scientific meetings specific to lung cancer, has sat on multiple advisory boards and has experience with speaking engagements across the lung cancer community. 

Ralph Hingson

Dr. Ralph Hingson is the Director of the Division of Epidemiology and Prevention Research at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA).  Before joining NIAAA, he was Professor and Associate Dean for Research at the Boston University School of Public Health.  He has authored or co-authored 170 research articles and book chapters, including studies of the effects of: (1) Raising the legal drinking age, (2) Zero tolerance laws for drivers under 21, (3) .08% legal blood alcohol limits for adult drivers, (4) comprehensive community programs to reduce alcohol problems, (5) early drinking onset on alcohol dependence, traffic crashes, unintentional injuries and physical fights after drinking, as well as 6) assessments of morbidity and mortality associated with underage drinking, drinking by U.S. college students ages 18-24, and interventions to reduce both underage and college drinking.  Dr. Hingson currently serves on the World Health Organization coordinating council to implement WHO’s global strategic plan to reduce the harmful use of alcohol. 

In recognition of his research contributions, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation honored Dr. Hingson in 2001 with its Innovators Combating Substance Abuse Award.  In 2002, he received the Widmark Award, the highest award bestowed by the International Council on Alcohol Drugs and Traffic Safety (ICADTS). Dr. Hingson is a Past President of ICADTS.  In 2003, Mothers Against Drunk Driving instituted the Ralph W. Hingson Research in Practice Annual Presidential Award, with Dr. Hingson honored as its first recipient.  In 2008, the American Society of Addiction Medicine conferred the R. Brinkley Smithers Distinguished Scientist Award to Dr. Hingson. In 2014, he received the University of Pittsburgh Legacy Laureate Award. In 2016, he received ICADTS’ Borkenstein Award for “Outstanding contributions to international cooperation in alcohol and drug related traffic safety programs.” In September of 2017, Dr. Hingson will receive will receive a National Institutes of Health (NIH) 2017 Director's Award for his role as a member of the Surgeon General's Report Team for the recently-released Surgeon General’s Report on Alcohol, Drugs, and Health.

After graduating from the Yale School of Medicine, I completed an internship, residency and fellowship in Hematology-Oncology at Bellevue Hospital and NYU Medical Center. These experiences taught me that the key to success in medicine is to be patient focused and put the patient’s needs first - values that I continue to hold and practice every day. I am certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine, and by the Hematology and Oncology Boards. Since 1986, I was on the NYU faculty in medical oncology, rising to full professor before moving to the Yale Cancer Center in 2010, where I was the Associate Director for Clinical Research and head of GI Oncology until joining Rutgers Cancer Institute.

My clinical expertise and research interests are dedicated to early drug development and clinical pharmacology, focused on tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. I have led numerous clinical trials and have been at the forefront of clinical research in GI Oncology and have been instrumental in the approval of eight new drugs for the treatment of colon cancer. I have authored more than 150 peer-reviewed articles on cancer therapy, new drug development and clinical trials and have presented many of these study results at national meetings. I have had two R01 funded research projects on cancer pharmacodynamics and was recently awarded a Lead Academic Participating Site Grant to support NCI sponsored clinical trials. I also have been very involved with the NCI National Clinical Trials Network (NCTN) and have chaired ten phase 2 and phase 3 studies in the NCI cooperative groups. Since 2013, I have chaired the GI Cancer Committee for SWOG (formerly, Southwestern Oncology Group), one of the four NCTN cooperative groups. Together with my SWOG and NCTN colleagues, we strive to design and conduct the studies that set standards of care for pioneering new treatments in cancer care.

Other professional activities include reviewing scientific publications and grant applications in my capacity as Associate Editor for the Journal of the National Cancer Institute and Journal of GI Oncology. I also regularly review manuscripts for Journal of Clinical Oncology, Cancer, British Medical Journal and Lancet. I review grants for the NCI and the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas. I am also a Medical Director of the Chemotherapy Foundation. In my free time, I am an avid marathon runner and century cyclist.

Health Law, Public Health, Human Rights

James Hodge is a national expert on emergency legal preparedness, obesity laws and policies, vaccination laws and public health information privacy. 
His work on these and other topics has been cited in various publications including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and additional regional newspapers, social media cites and journals.

Hodge is the Peter Kiewit Foundation Professor of Law at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law and Director of the Center for Public Health Law and Policy at ASU. Through scholarship, teaching, and applied projects, Professor Hodge delves into multiple areas of health law, public health law, global health law, ethics, and human rights.

Professor Hodge advises numerous federal, state, and local governments on public health law and policy issues and has lectured extensively on diverse topics in international locations including Sydney, Toronto and Barcelona. 
Dr. Steve Hodges, a pediatric urologist who practices in Winston-Salem, NC, is a leading expert when it comes to children and issues related to toilet training, bedwetting and constipation. His own published research shows that children trained before age 2 have a much higher risk of having accidents compared to those trained later and are more likely to become habitual holders of their pee and poop, which can lead to issues with constipation.

Hodges can discuss how today's today’s modern parents feel societal and financial pressure to toilet train their children before they are developmentally and physically ready. In his opinion, few children are ready to be fully toilet trained before the age of 3.
He can discuss how diet affects children's bowel systems: what goes in (food) determines what comes out (poop). A diet full of highly processed foods like crackers, chicken nuggets and hotdogs without lots of vegetables, fruits and fibers often leads to constipation.
Hodges can discuss how improper poop or pee posture can affect children's ability to fully eliminate: When it comes to pooping, it’s not enough to have a cute little seat in place because a “squatting” position improves childrens’ ability to fully eliminate. They need to sit on the toilet with their feet on a tall stool, leaning forward, elbows on knees.

And, he can address how parents and caregivers should not ASK if their child has to go to the bathroom because they will likely say NO because they don’t want to stop whatever activity they are involved in. Instead, children should be directed to attempt to pee about every two hours and should be encouraged in a way that works for them individually.
When children hold their pee at this young age, this actually leads to smaller bladder capacity which can lead to problems like bedwetting.
