Materials used for their mechanical strength employ a variety of toughening mechanisms. At the nanoscale, intrinsic toughening mechanisms that promote flexibility occur in front of a moving crack. At larger length scales, extrinsic toughening mechanisms, specifically those that help reduce the stress that forces the crack to advance and grow, act mostly behind the crack tip.
