Student volunteers from The University of Texas at El Paso help install a rainwater harvesting system at a home in the Las Pampas colonia near Presidio, Texas, in this June 2017 photo. The students were part of Engineers for a Sustainable World, a group from UTEP’s College of Engineering. Their work on the rainwater harvesting system was part of an initiative led by UTEP’s Center for Environmental Resource Management (CERM), which worked to reduce the need for the colonia’s residents to haul water from nearby Presidio. Their work has yielded a Texas Rain Catcher Award. William Hargrove, Ph.D., director of CERM, will accept the award Wednesday, March 21, during the Texas Water Development Board’s regular meeting in Austin, Texas.
