Differentiating a skin cancer from a harmless lesion can be tricky, especially for medical students who are still acquainting themselves with dermatology. Michael Kolodney, chair of WVU’s Department of Dermatology, has developed a smartphone app to help students practice diagnosing melanomas, a type of skin cancer, based on their appearance. Visual diagnoses like these—instead of checklist-based diagnoses—reflect how experienced dermatologists diagnose their patients’ lesions.
