Newswise — Old Westbury, NY (March 1, 2016) – Lou Reinisch, Ph.D., an accomplished educator, researcher, and administrator at universities in the United States, Europe, and New Zealand, joins New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) today as associate provost for academic affairs.

In partnership with the faculty and academic leadership of NYIT, Reinisch will contribute to and support the successful development of new NYIT degree proposals and plans, oversee accreditation and assessment of courses and programs, and serve as NYIT’s liaison to the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and the New York State Department of Education. Reporting to Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Rahmat Shoureshi, Ph.D., Reinisch will also lead and promote interdisciplinary programs and innovative curriculum development in collaboration with academic deans and help drive initiatives designed to increase student retention and achieve excellence in scholarship, teaching, and service.

“Lou stood out as our ideal candidate due to his depth of experience and success in curriculum development, attracting and retaining outstanding faculty, increasing academic scholarship and research funding levels,” said Shoureshi. “Additionally, his global perspective and strategic planning prowess will be invaluable to NYIT in both near- and long-term initiatives.”

Reinisch joins NYIT from Farmingdale State College (SUNY). As Dean of Arts and Sciences, he reorganized several departments and programs and increased research publication by new faculty. Prior to that, he was head of the Department of Physical and Earth Sciences at Jacksonville (Alabama) State University; major accomplishments include initiating flexible learning and modern teaching techniques and new approaches for teaching and learning with technology. He also served as dean of the College of Science at University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand, and spent more than a decade at Vanderbilt University as an assistant and then associate professor in the departments of Otolaryngology and Physics.

“I bring to the NYIT community a spectrum of expertise gained by working in different countries and across varying levels of academic institutions, including medical schools and public and private universities,” Reinisch said. “Further, my broad skill set spans several disciplines, including research, securing funding and grants, peer-reviewed publishing, industry consulting, and entrepreneurship efforts, all of which I am anxious to contribute to the university as it continues to distinguish itself.”

Reinisch earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He was a research fellow at the University of Muenster in Germany and a research associate at the Biological Research Center in Szeged, Hungary. He is a frequent public speaker, has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, and has nearly 50 book chapters in textbooks and proceedings.
