Newswise — Colgate University's Upstate Institute will host a celebration of the induction of its inaugural class of National Abolition Hall of Fame (NAHOF) honorees on the school's campus Oct. 22. The gathering will feature a symposium and ceremony commemorating the five inductees, who include William Lloyd Garrison, Frederick Douglass, Lucretia Mott, Harriet Tubman, and Gerrit Smith.

Both activities are free and open to the public. In addition to the living descendants of the five honorees, world-renowned slavery experts, historians, students, and state and local legislators are expected to be in attendance.

The day's schedule is as follows (events will take place in Golden Auditorium of Colgate's Little Hall unless otherwise noted):

"¢ 1:30 to 2:15 p.m.—"The National Abolition Hall of Fame," an overview of the NAHOF, its purpose, and progress on the project"¢ 2:30 to 3:15 p.m.—"The Second Abolition," a discussion of cultural diversity, how it relates to the word today, and the mission of the NAHOF "¢ 3:30 to 4:15 p.m.—"The Abolitionists," a presentation by the scholars on the first five inductees to the NAHOF"¢ 7 p.m., the Palace Theater in Hamilton—the NAHOF induction ceremony, which will feature performances by Colgate students, a professional Frederick Douglass reenactor, music, and refreshments

The Upstate Institute, Morrisville State College's Johnson Institute, and the Smithfield Community Association teamed up to launch the NAHOF and museum in October 2004. In addition to honoring famous abolitionists, the initiative aims to bring attention to modern battles against injustice around the world and educate the public about human rights issues.

The hall of fame building has not yet been constructed. The museum will be located in the Smithfield Community Center in the hamlet of Peterboro, the scene of the first New York State Anti-slavery Society meeting in October 1835.
