Newswise — Nearly 800 people from approximately 35 countries spanning five continents are expected to convene April 28-30 for the 2011 International Conference on Eating Disorders (ICED), held at the InterContinental Hotel in Miami, Florida, USA. ICED is the annual meeting of the Academy for Eating Disorders (AED), a global professional association committed to leadership in eating disorders research, education, treatment, and prevention. This year’s conference theme is “The Complexity of Eating Disorders: Many Perspectives, One Shared Goal.”

Featured topics include: •A novel approach to treatment, couples therapy in treatment of adults with anorexia nervosa •Discoveries on how reward centers in the brain may affect the persistence of eating disorders •Global perspectives on public policy in eating disorders prevention •Special child and adolescent concerns, such as the use of electronic and social media to enhance prevention and treatment •Discussion of the possible controversies involved in simultaneously confronting obesity and eating disorders issues by a panel of experts

The conference will conclude with a seminar on genetic findings which may have implications for the development of eating disorders. Also offered on the last day is a popular Global Think Tank session in which attendees will discuss information on integrating the latest research findings into treatment.

In conjunction with the conference, a fundraising event will be held on Friday, April 29, from 6:30 - 8 p.m., with all proceeds benefitting AED. Aimee Liu, author of Gaining: The Truth about Life after Eating Disorders, will launch her new book, Restoring Our Bodies, Reclaiming Our Lives. The book is about eating disorders recovery, told through letters written by individuals in different stages of the recovery process.
