On July 26, 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed into law the Americans with Disabilities Act. Susanne Bruyère, the director of Cornell University’s ILR Employment & Disability Institute says we’ve learned a lot since the landmark legislation was born, and those lessons are now spreading around the world.
Bruyère says:
“The ADA has had a significant impact. It’s been 23 years and I think we’ve figured out lots of things under the protections that it affords.
“We see ramps in many more public places, we see Braille on elevators and also in public places, and we see employers beginning to respond to their recognition that inclusion of people with disabilities in their recruitment and retention strategies is an important part of doing good business. We think these are significant changes while recognizing that we have lots more to do.
“One of the most compelling agendas that we are beginning to focus on is how to take what we’ve learned to other places in the world.”
