Newswise — Popular "Teaching Faulkner" workshops bring high school teachers to the University of Mississippi's 32nd annual Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference July 24-28.

The how-to-teach sessions, which are held each year and are open to all conference registrants, are intended to further the study of the Nobel Prize-winning author among younger students.

"The teacher workshops are among the most exciting and well-attended sessions at the Faulkner Conference," said Joseph Urgo, chair of the Department of English. "The handouts and the hands-on advice are aspects that teachers every year find to be extremely helpful."

This year's conference, "Faulkner's Inheritance," explores the late novelist's "influences" and what happens to them in his writings. Teachers of all disciplines who have taught or have an avid interest in teaching students about Faulkner are encouraged to attend the conference and especially the workshops, said Donald Kartiganer, conference director and Howry Professor of Faulkner Studies.

"The sessions will help high school teachers make better use of Faulkner's work in their teaching, with greater emphasis placed on 'how' to teach Faulkner in the classroom," Kartiganer said.

At 8:30 a.m. Monday (July 25), the workshops "Teaching Faulkner I: The Short Story Heritage" and "Teaching Faulkner II: 'The Unvanquished'" are scheduled to run concurrently in Johnson Commons ballroom and Barnard Observatory, respectively. A third session, "Teaching Faulkner," takes place the following Thursday morning at 8:30 in Johnson Commons.

Workshop leaders are James B. Carothers of University of Kansas, Charles Peek of University of Nebraska at Kearney, Terrell L. Tebbetts of Lyons College and Theresa Towner of University of Texas at Dallas.

Before July 8, the conference registration fee is $150 for students, $250 for Friends of the Center for the Study of Southern Culture and $275 for all other participants. The fee does not cover lodging, optional tours and meals. All fees increase by $25 after July 8. There is an additional $20 charge for teachers desiring continuing education unit credit.
