Newswise — The death toll at Anthony Sowell’s home rose to an astonishing eleven bodies today (including one skull), making this the most gruesome and deadliest crime scene in Cleveland history. Why would someone rape and kill eleven people, and keep their bodies so close? Reports of a horrific stench are now coming from neighbors, a terrible smell they had endured for years. How can someone live in that type of environment, and allegedly continue to rape and kill seemingly without remorse?

Dr. Eric Hickey is an expert on serial killers, psychopaths and sexual predators.

“Anthony Sowell is probably into necrophilia. Having a head or skull around is very typical of necrophiliacs. As far as why he kept the bodies in the house, it could be as simple as he didn’t have a convenient means to get rid of them, so he put the bodies in his home. However, it could be more likely that looking at the decaying bodies gave him a thrill. This is reminiscent of John Wayne Gacy, a prolific serial killer who went undetected for long time, all the while sexually assaulting, killing, and burying his victims in his home.”

Dr. Hickey further comments, “The label ‘serial rapist’ just scratches the surface with this perpetrator. He likely picked up those who would not immediately be missed, such as prostitutes or drug users, or those without close family. Sowell definitely has psychopathic characteristics if he’s not a full blown psychopathic sexual predator.”

Dr. Hickey is author of several books including Serial Murderers and Their Victims, now in its 5th edition. Dean Hickey has taught many courses in criminal personalities, sex crimes, homicide and psychopathology. He has considerable field experience working with the criminally insane, psychopaths, sex offenders and other habitual criminals. He publishes books, articles and lectures extensively on the etiology of violence and serial crime. He serves as the Dean of the California School of Forensic Studies at Alliant International University.
