Newswise — Rockville, Md. – ARVO Immediate Past President Peng Tee Khaw, MD, PhD, FARVO, is the first member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) to be knighted in the Queen’s birthday honors. Sir Peng is the only U.K.-based member to have served as president in the association’s 85-year history. He presided over the ARVO 2013 Annual Meeting in Seattle, Wash., themed Life-changing Research, with nearly 11, 500 attendees from across the globe.
“ARVO has played a very important role in my scientific career, particularly through the outstanding and inspirational people I have met and learned from over the years,” said Sir Peng.
Sir Peng is professor of glaucoma and ocular healing, and consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. He is also director of the U.K. National Institute for Health Research Biomedical Research Centre in Ophthalmology at Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, London. He serves as director of Research & Development at Moorfields and director of the Eyes and Vision Programme of UCL Partners, one of the five U.K. Academic Health Science Centres of excellence.
A passionate advocate for eye and vision research, Sir Peng has raised over £80 million (U.S. $125 million) for research programs and new clinical facilities. His innovative research includes developing therapies particularly for glaucoma surgery, surgical techniques that have markedly improved the safety of glaucoma surgery, and anti-scarring regimens that have been used internationally. He and his team have been awarded over 20 national and international awards,
Sir Peng was trained in both general medicine and ophthalmology and earned his PhD in cell and molecular biology of ocular wound healing at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and University of Florida. He treats complex adult patients and children with glaucoma from the U.K., Europe and other parts of the world. He is featured on The Times Magazine’s lists of Britain’s best doctors for adults and children.
