Newswise — WASHINGTON, DC, May 15, 2012 — American Sociological Association (ASA) Executive Officer Sally T. Hillsman lauded the Library of Congress’ decision to award sociologist and former Brazilian President Fernando Henrique Cardoso the 2012 John W. Kluge Prize. The Library of Congress announced its selection on Monday.
The $1 million Kluge Prize is awarded for lifetime achievement in fields of humanistic and social science studies that are not included in the Nobel Prizes, most notably history, philosophy, politics, psychology, anthropology, sociology, religious studies, linguistics, and criticism in the arts and humanities, according to the Library of Congress, which noted that Cardoso is the first prize recipient whose work spans the fields of sociology, political science, and economics.
“Sociologists are constantly making important contributions to society, and the selection of Fernando Henrique Cardoso as the 2012 John W. Kluge Prize winner reinforces the significance of our efforts,” said Hillsman. “On behalf of the American Sociological Association’s more than 14,000 members, I want to publically congratulate Fernando on this extraordinary achievement and to thank him for his distinguished work, which has benefitted the discipline and the world.”
In 2004, Cardoso spoke at a Plenary Session on the future of neoliberalism at the ASA’s Annual Meeting in San Francisco. “It was truly an honor to have Fernando address our members,” Hillsman said.
