News Facts- Carnegie Corporation of New York has awarded the U.S. Civilian Research & Development Foundation (CRDF) a $1 million grant, awarded incrementally over three years, toward its Basic Research and Higher Education (BRHE) program—an effort to reintegrate research into university science education in Russian universities.

- The grant is the latest from the Carnegie Corporation, which has donated a total of $5 million since 1998; and begins the final phase of CRDF's involvement in the project as program support shifts from U.S. to Russian funding sources in 2010. Funds will support core BRHE programs including research, post-doctoral fellowships, and English immersion training conferences.

- With the support of the Carnegie Corporation, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and others, CRDF initially established 16 centers across Russia. Their success has been credited with stimulating scientific cooperation among Russian universities, institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences and foreign research centers.

- The program reached a major milestone in January 2005 when its model was adopted by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science to establish 15 new Ministry-supported centers; four of which now participate in the BRHE program.

Quotes - "Carnegie Corporation is pleased to renew its support to CRDF to continue the BRHE program, which has revitalized and transformed science education in Russia." " Deana Arsenian, Vice President, International Program Coordination, Carnegie Corporation of New York - "BRHE is a clear and demonstrative example of cooperation between Russia and the United States in strengthening education and science at various levels. This program differs from other projects in aims because it seeks to support fundamental science as the basis of the Russian higher education system." - Dmitry Livanov, Deputy Minister of Education and Science, State Secretary, Russian Federation- "What's been gratifying is that this program has been one of the most successful joint U.S.-Russian ventures over the past decade." - Dr. John Slocum, Director of Migration and Human Mobility and co-chair of the Higher Education Initiative in Russia for the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation- "BRHE has had a powerful effect on enhancing, and expanding, teaching and research in the Russian Federation. As Russia regains its economic strength, it is gratifying to see our Russian partners adopt this model throughout their higher education system." " Dr. Eric J. Novotny, Vice President for Programs, CRDF
