Jane Elmes-Crahall, associate professor of communications at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, PA is available during the Republican convention to comment for you on the effectiveness of the keynote addresses, acceptance speeches and other major speeches.

Dr. Elmes-Crahall is an expert in political rhetoric. She teaches rhetoric at Wilkes and for years organized major political debates throughout Pennsylvania for the League of Women Voters. Some of her thoughts after watching Dick Cheney's speech August 2:

"Cheney was calm and enjoyed himself thoroughly. He reminds me of a favorite uncle. People like him no matter what he says. He introduced all the negatives of Clinton. There's a striking contrast between this negative message and this very likeable man. You can bet that he'll be the one doing the negative campaigns."

"The multi-media approach to this convention is kind of like expensive home movies put to bad music. So, he didn't really have to pull anything together, but he's foreshadowing what we'll see in the rest of the campaign. Cheney will do most of the hard-hitting. He's very likable...and will be doing most of the punching."

"Gore has to try to separate himself from his leader's shadow. That will be the task for him. Cheney is really pointing out challenges of Gore's campaign. Gore has to try to separate himself from his leader's shadow. Things Cheney said like restoring decency to and courage to the White House and phrases like 'Clinton's last hour' all got standing ovations. Cheney laid down what kind of negative campaign we're going to see. And he gave Gore a dose of reality."

She has been following the presidential race and can comment on the rhetoric of the candidates. Please feel free to give Jane a call anytime regarding major speeches by politicians.
