Many people are surprised to learn that a child can die from heat stroke on a 72-degree day. Even during mild weather, the temperature inside a car can rise 20 degrees in 10 minutes. According to Safe Kids USA, more than 500 children across the U.S. have died from hyperthermia, while unattended in a vehicle since 1998.

Erin Whitton, manager, injury prevention and community outreach, ProMedica Toledo Children’s Hospital; and coordinator, Safe Kids Greater Toledo, is a frequent media commentator on issues of child safety and injury prevention, such as child safety in and around cars, fireworks safety, fire and burn safety, and water safety.
