Newswise — Serious research in the past few years has confirmed that climate change is, indeed, a national and global security issue.

As the growth of scientific evidence regarding global warming continues, so too has military concern increased about the national security repercussions stemming from climate change.

An informative look at how the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) is assessing the consequences from climate change is highlighted in the Spring 2010 issue of the quarterly print and online publication - Imaging Notes magazine.

The article, “DoD Takes Aim at Climate Change: National Security at Stake,” is authored by Dan Stillman, Science Communications Manager for the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies in Arlington, Virginia.

Sobering reminder

“Dan Stillman has written a thoughtful summary of why the Department of Defense (DOD) needs to pay close attention to the effects of climate change. He provides a sobering reminder of the possible serious effects of climate change on human security,” said Dr. Ray Williamson, Executive Director of the Secure World Foundation.

In his article, Stillman points out that climate change has been a serious concern for military leaders long before reports and headlines focused on the topic over the past few years.

“Historically, DoD has worked closely with other federal agencies in both observing climate and understanding how it might change in the future,” Stillman explains. As scientific evidence supporting global warming has grown, so has the military’s concern about the consequences, he reports.

Satellite examination of the planet

Along with Stillman’s comprehensive article, the Imaging Notes issue also offers:

A detailed look at increased international use of radar data from satellites to “see” through clouds and at night; emergency response to the Haiti earthquake that included pre- and post-event satellite imagery; a central repository for monitoring the Earth’s vital systems, one that takes school children along for the experience of examining our home planet.
