Newswise — "Mom, dad, what is global warming?"

Is your child wondering what global warming is, or worrying about the consequences? News about global warming is everywhere; in the newspaper, on the internet, featured on the TV, the radio, even at the movies. It is hard for grown-ups to sort out what it all means and what we should do about it. For children, it can seem even more complicated and scary. Global warming is arguably the largest environmental issue facing the planet and it will have an enormous impact on our children's generation.

Anytime your child asks you a complex question, your heart's pace likely quickens. Do you know enough about the issue to speak from an informed perspective? How can you talk to your child without overwhelming him or her? Can you find the needed resources to help you discuss global warming in a way that will increase your child's understanding and empower him or her to make a difference.

The National Wildlife Federation is launching a new website called the Climate Classroom, which provides great guidelines for discussing global warming with your children. It includes pointers such as: "¢ When your child inquires about global warming, it is important to allow your child to explore the issues and lead the conversation."¢ As a parent, you must keep an age conscious perspective due to the underlying complexity of global warming. You would not speak to an eight-year old about the cause of global warming and possible solutions in the same way that you would address your 13 year old. "¢ It is extremely important to speak positively about the solutions and opportunities associated with global warming so kids know that we can turn this problem around and they can contribute.

The web site also gives the answers to common questions kids ask about global warming. Check it out at:
