Newswise — Colgate President Rebecca S. Chopp has announced a $400 million campaign for the university — the largest ever in the institution's history. The mission of the campaign, to prepare students for leadership in the 21st century, will be made possible through investment in academic programs, student life, financial aid, and the endowment and annual fund.

Colgate already is nearly halfway to meeting its $400 million goal; to date, the university has raised $180 million — $23 million more than university's previous campaign that ended in 1997.

"We have developed a plan that addresses the major global issues of the day while ensuring the continually evolving strength of Colgate's living and learning community," said Chopp. "This campaign will enable us to build on our traditional strengths and shape programs that move toward solving the complex problems that society faces today."

In 2003, the university launched a strategic plan that recognizes that education is increasingly interdisciplinary, global in scope, and totally enabled by technology, with emerging fields of study not even imagined a decade ago. While Colgate has already been successful in implementing many facets of the plan, the campaign will ensure that the university has the resources to fully implement it and secure the future of critical resources for financial aid, faculty and student support, and other areas.

"This is a moment of great opportunity," commented campaign chair and Colgate Trustee Jim Elrod '76. "The progress we have made in just ten years is remarkable. Right now we have the plan, the leadership, and the community necessary for Colgate to make a great leap forward."

"There is a direct correlation between a high-quality educational experience and preparation for engaged citizenship in our global society," added Vice President for Institutional Advancement and director of the campaign Murray Decock '80. "This campaign recognizes that connection and it makes the case for investment in Colgate's future " our students."

"At the heart of the Colgate experience is outstanding academics," said John Golden '66, chairman of Colgate's Board of Trustees and founder of the financial advisory firm John A. Golden Associates. "This campaign aims to amplify our academic excellence by expanding opportunities for collaboration between our superb faculty and students, and continues to build the powerful faculty-student relationships that shaped so many of our experiences."

Colgate's current campaign builds on the success of the university's previous one, a $157 million effort that concluded in 1997. That campaign fueled much of the momentum Colgate has built over the past decade by bringing to campus new faculty chairs, increased financial aid, funding for study groups and the construction of Little Hall, Persson Hall, and Tyler's Field.
