Colorado Attorney General Ken Salazar, a 1977 Colorado College alumnus, will speak during Colorado College's 2001 commencement ceremony.

Salazar, elected Attorney General in 1998, has focused his efforts on reducing youth and family violence, combating fraud against the elderly, and protecting Colorado's environment. He oversees the Department of Law and its staff of 300. He also serves on the Colorado Water Conservation Board and is chairman of the Peace Officer Standards and Training Board, which certifies Colorado's 11,000 law enforcement officers. He is currently a member of the American Farmland Trust President's Council and the Board of Trustees of Colorado College. He received an honorary doctorate of laws from CC in 1993.

After earning his political science degree from CC and his law degree in 1981 from the University of Michigan, Salazar served as chief legal counsel to Colorado's governor (1987-1990), executive director of the Department of Natural Resources (1990-1994), and chairman of the Rio Grande Compact Commission and the Great Outdoors Colorado Trust Fund. He practiced law for six years at Sherman & Howard, Denver's oldest law firm.

Recent commencement speakers have included U.S. Congresswoman Diana DeGette, U.S. Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson, and Nobel Peace Prize winner and former Costa Rican President Oscar Arias.
