Congressman Tim Ryan (D-Ohio), along with Congresswoman Judy Biggert (R-Illinois) and Congressman Kildee (D-Michigan), co-sponsored House Bill 4223, the Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning Act of 2009, which was introduced in the last session of Congress. CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning) leaders and collaborators were actively involved in developing and supporting the legislation, along with Congressman Ryan. New legislation embodying similar principles (e.g., national resources for SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) implementation and research on the effectiveness of implementation) is anticipated in the current Congress.

Congressman Ryan also sponsored a two-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education bringing SEL to the 17th Congressional District in Ohio.

At AERA, Congressman Ryan's address will be followed by a discussion, moderated by David Osher, vice president, American Institutes for Research; and a reception, which continues until 3:00 p.m.

Congressman Ryan’s address will be part of the 2011 AERA Annual Meeting which draws more than 13,000 scholars and researchers to New Orleans between Friday, April 8, and Tuesday, April 12, to examine issues of education research and public policy. Education researchers from diverse disciplines, across national boundaries, and from a spectrum of methodologies gather for five days of rich scholarship, significant symposia, and opportunities for learning and collegial discourse. The meeting theme is “Inciting the Social Imagination: Education Research for the Public Good.” More than 2,000 peer-reviewed sessions emphasize innovative approaches to education research, particularly work that contributes to robust public policy and the public good, with the intent that the 2011 Annual Meeting will stimulate a new dialogue about the contributions that education research can make to the public sphere.
