Newswise — In the summer of 2010 the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) approved the creation of their newest disciplinary-based division, the Health Sciences Division. CUR, with its nearly 600 institutional members and more than 5500 individual members, supports faculty development for high-quality undergraduate student-faculty collaborative research and scholarship.

The growing membership and active participation in faculty-mentored undergraduate research in the Health Sciences warranted the development of a unique division for faculty from the health sciences including: exercise science, nutrition, nursing, pre-medicine, occupational health/safety, and other allied health professions. The first Division Chair Paul Miller, Elon University, when asked about this new initiative said, “we are excited to usher in the new Health Sciences Division of CUR. We look forward to developing initiatives that will support and facilitate the wonderful scholarship undergraduate students are doing in the health sciences.” CUR Executive Officer Nancy Hensel commented, “the Council on Undergraduate Research is pleased to welcome Health Science as a new division. I see the incorporation of health science into CUR as a great opportunity to support basic and applied research, which can lead to new and innovative collaborations and interdisciplinary research within this field.”

This division will provide a more formalized support network for those facilitating and those participating in undergraduate research in the Health Sciences. This new division will help to solidify a sense of community and support the growth and development of the field, Miller went on to recognize others pivotal to this important first step, “I would also like to recognize Drs. Eric Hall, Alan Utter, Jing Wang, and Carie Braun for all their contributions that led to the formation of this new division."
