Creative Writing and Science is Topic of Conference Oct. 26-27

Richard Rhodes, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for his book, "The Making of the Atomic Bomb," will be one of the leaders of The University of Tulsa's Oct. 26-27 writing conference, "The Shape of Discovery: Exploring the Chaos and Complex Systems of Creative Writing and Science."

The conference, which is organized by Nimrod, TU's international literary journal, will be held in the university's Allen Chapman Activity Center, Fifth Place and south Gary Avenue.

The conference begins with the Hardman Awards dinner at 7 p.m. Oct. 26, where winners of Nimrod's annual fiction and poetry contest will be honored and brief readings will be presented.

Writing workshops and a forum on science and literature will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 27. Two readings, free and open to the public, are scheduled at 10:30 a.m. and 1:45 p.m.

The conference, which is open to the public, will offer participants one-on-one work sessions with an editor. The private sessions in poetry, prose and nonfiction writing will offer beginning and advanced writers an opportunity to interact with published writers. Participants must submit a two-page writing sample by Oct. 20. The sample may be on any subject and in any style.

Other conference leaders include former national public radio host Judith Strasser; Canadian poet and physicist Kim Maltman; Australian novelist Janette Turner Hospital; award-winning poet Pattiann Rogers; poet, psycholinguist and natural scientist Robin Chapman; poet and mathematician Marcia Birken; playwrights David Kranes and Michael Wright; and the winners of Nimrod's contest, former Tulsan Diane Glancy, Steve Lautermilch, Kate Small and Gina Ochsner.
