Domestic Violence Conference

Domestic Violence is an issue of pressing concern across the country. In recognition of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Brooklyn Campus of Long Island University and the Kings County District Attorney's Office will present a free two-day conference, "The Trial of Domestic Violence Cases: Cutting Edge Issues for Law Enforcement and Advocates," on Tuesday, October 5, and Wednesday, October 6, in the Humanities Building Conference Hall, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The keynote speakers are Charles J. Hynes, District Attorney, Kings County, and Howard Safir, Commissioner, New York City Police Department. The conference features a variety of informative topics and workshops. Speakers will talk about forensic evidence and evidence gathering, Battered Women's Syndrome, evidence-based prosecution of domestic violence cases, marital rape, stalking and stalking legislation, batterer's intervention programs, cultural differences in the prosecution of domestic violence cases, and special issues surrounding women with disabilities.

Scheduled speakers include Dr. Jonathan Arden, former deputy chief medical examiner for Kings County, New York, and currently chief medical examiner for the District of Columbia; Kenneth Taub, deputy district attorney for the King's County District Attorney's Office; Victoria Lutz, Pace University Law School Battered Women's Justice Center; Patti Jo Newell, New York State Coalition Against Domestic Violence; Honorable Justices John Leventhal and Matthew J. D'Emic; Lucia Raiford, director of the domestic violence unit, New York City Police Department; Lauren Shapiro, director of the family law unit, Brooklyn Legal Services; and Paul B. Fuerstein, Barrier Free Living; and professors from Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus.

There is no fee to participate, but registration is required.
