Newswise — Providence, R.I.--Nearly 70 Providence College students from a variety of academic disciplines will display their research and creative work at the second annual Celebration of Student Scholarship and Creativity on Wednesday, April 13.

Sponsored by the Student Engagement Advisory Committee (SEAC), the event will take place from 3:00-5:00 p.m. in the Slavin Center. The event is free and open to the public.

The Celebration of Student Scholarship and Creativity is supported by the College's three-year Fostering a Culture of Student Engagement grant from the Davis Educational Foundation. The foundation supports undergraduate programs of public, private, regionally accredited, and baccalaureate degree-granting colleges and universities throughout New England.

Each academic department and program was asked by the SEAC to nominate student projects to be presented with the goal of representing student engagement from across all disciplines.

As a result, work from more than 20 academic disciplines--ranging from art history to public and community service studies to mathematics and computer science--will be represented on posters and in artistic displays.

Presentation topics include "The Tunisia Effect: Facebook's Role in Revolution," "Instrumentation for Water Balance Dynamics at Town Pond," "Gender, Literacy, and Summer Reading for Middle Schoolers," and "Let's Move!: From D.C. to PC."

Noting the success of last year's inaugural event, Dr. Bryan D. Marinelli, director of academic services/writing center and a member of the SEAC, said he's excited for people to see the exceptional research that will be on display.

"Those who attend this year's event will be very impressed by the variety and quality of the projects," he said. "Last year's turnout was very strong, but I hope even more faculty, staff, and students take a few minutes out of their day to see the provocative work that these talented young scholars have done."

The Celebration of Student Scholarship and Creativity is being held as part of the Council on Undergraduate Research's (CUR) national observance of 2011 Undergraduate Research Week from April 11-15. Providence College is a member of the CUR.
