Who:Gary Orfield is Professor of Education, Law, Political Science and Urban Planning at the University of California, Los Angeles, where his research focuses on the study of civil rights, education policy, urban policy, and minority opportunity.
Prior to UCLA, Dr. Orfield was a professor of education and social policy at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He was co-founder and director of the Harvard Civil Rights Project, and now serves as co-director of the Civil Rights Project/Proyecto Derechos Civiles at UCLA.
Professor Orfield has been involved in the development of governmental policy and has served as an expert witness in several dozen court cases related to his research, including the University of Michigan Supreme Court case which upheld the policy of affirmative action in 2003.
Why:As the nation approaches the 60th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education decision, issues of equal educational opportunity remain unresolved and civil rights for all still struggles to find its footing. Four months after the Supreme Court’s decision in Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin to send the case back to the Fifth Circuit Court, and two weeks after the Court heard arguments in Schuette v. Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action, the future of affirmative action in American education is far from clear.
Dr. Orfield will discuss the interplay of education research, diversity, and equal opportunity at this critical juncture, and provide his vision for forging A New Civil Rights Movement in American Education.
