EDWARD SAID BRINGS 'TRAGEDY OF PALESTINE' TO RICE
WHO: Edward Said, professor of comparative literature and chair of the doctoral program at Columbia University
WHAT: President's Lecture Series talk on "The Tragedy of Palestine"
WHEN: 8 p.m., Thursday, March 26, 1998
WHERE: Rice Memorial Center, Grand Hall
For Edward Said, the Middle East peace process is not just an ongoing news story about a faraway place. It is about the salvation of his homeland. He has been a consultant to the United Nations, is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and served from 1977 to 1991 on the Palestine National Council, which is the parliament in exile of the Palestinian people.
Among Said's most recent writings are Peace and Its Discontents: Essays on Palestine in the Middle East Peace Process (Vintage 1995) and The Politics of Depression: The Struggle for Palestinian Self-Determination 1969-94 (Pantheon 1994 and Chatto/Vintage, London).
The event is free and open to the public. It is co-sponsored by the Arab Educational Foundation, the Center for the Study of Cultures and Rice's Department of History.
