EVANSTON, Ill. --- Most Northwestern University engineering graduates pursue further study and many will go on to other careers within a few years of earning their degrees, according to a survey of recent graduates.

Based on past history, 40 percent of the 328 undergraduates who received degrees June 19 from the Northwestern University Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science will postpone their career and pursue advanced degrees -- twice the national average.

One-fourth will get advanced degrees in engineering, 9 percent in medicine, 5 percent in law and 2 percent in business.

But of the other 60 percent of the graduating class who start engineering careers right after graduation, 90 percent will return to the classroom within 5 to 10 years to earn an MBA degree.

McCormick offers students joint educational programs in medicine, arts and sciences, management, music, learning sciences, dentistry, research, education, journalism and law.
