Dr. Pyles, a practicing psychoanalyst and psychiatrist, was involved in some of the original work on PTSD, as a result of work he did from 1967 to 1969 with post-combat Marines in Vietnam.
GROUP PSYCHOLOGY UNDER STRESS; TERROISM AND TRAUMA

Dr. Vamik Volkan, a psychiatry professor and director of the University Center for the Study of Mind and Human Interaction (CSMHI) at the University of Virginia Medical School, has spent years studying the causes of terrorism, ethnic tension, racism and the social effects of such conflicts. He is also the author of the book "Bloodlines: From Ethnic Pride to Ethnic Cleansing."
CSMHI is an interdisciplinary center that practices "preventive medicine" in the broadest sense. CSMHI is on the forefront of studies in large-group dynamics and applies a growing theoretical and field-proven base of knowledge to issues such as ethnic tension, racism, national identity, terrorism, societal trauma, leader-follower relationships, and other aspects of national and international conflict.
POLITICAL PSYCHOLOGY AND HISTORY

Dr. Loewenberg teaches history and political psychology at UCLA. He is also a practicing psychoanalyst. Integrating the identities of an historian and political psychologist with the clinical practice of psychoanalysis, he is also Chairman of the Education Committee and Director or the Training School, Southern California Psychoanalytic Institute.
He is author of Decoding the Past: The Psychohistorical Approach (1983, 1985, 1996), and Fantasy and Reality in History (1995) and numerous articles on history, political psychology, psychoanalysis, and their relationship to each other. He has lectured and taught widely in America, Europe, Africa, Israel, China, and Latin America.
PSYCHODYNAMICS OF VIOLENCE

Dr. Blackman is professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia and a training civilian supervisor and consultant to the faculty at the Naval Medical Center Dept of Psychiatry in Portsmouth, Virginia.
His current teaching often touches on the psychodynamics of violence. Since many of his students are from the middle and near eastern countries, classroom discussions often focus on their experiences with various forms of terrorism.

Dr. Kilborne holds a PhD in Cultural-Psychological Anthropology and a PhD in Clinical Psychoanalysis. He has done trauma work with Crisis Management International for the past decade and has more than twenty years of clinical experience with severely traumatized patients. He is the author of many trauma-related publications including "When Trauma Strikes the Soul" published in The American Journal of Psychoanalysis, vol 59(4)385-402).
TRAUMA AND REGRESSION

Dr. Blum is a renowned expert on trauma, object loss, affect disturbance, and regression. Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Blum is the Director of the Freud Archives and is extraordinarily well versed in Freud's case histories. He is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the NYU Psychoanalytic Institute, and is a recipient of the Sigourney Prize.
ASSISTANCE FOR TRAUMA WORKERS, ALTRUISM, AND RESILIENCE

Dr. Seelig is Director of the Emory University Psychoanalytic Institute and Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Emory School of Medicine. She has experience in dealing with volunteers for dangerous undertakings as well as trauma survivors. She is the author of several papers on altruism and psychological resilience. As Director of the Emory Outpatient Psychotherapy Training Program, she teaches psychiatry residents how to work with persons experiencing a variety of psychological stressors.
