Starting on Saturday, August 23, Maryland Institute College of Art's fall exhibition schedule gets underway with the opening of the College's Foundation and Sabbatical exhibitions. Other exhibitions during the fall semester include the annual Faculty and Juried Undergraduate exhibitions, a solo exhibition by MICA faculty member and illustrator Warren Linn, Grace Hartigan: Painting Art History, The Fables of Jean De La Fontaine, and Babble Lab.

Timed to coincide with the arrival of new freshmen, Maryland Institute College of Art's Foundation Exhibition is one of the College's most highly regarded student exhibitions featuring work produced by freshman who entered MICA in fall 2002. It's a first glimpse of the work of artists who will be developing their skills and vision over the next three years, and a great opportunity for the public to sample works in drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, fibers, printmaking, and graphic design.

MICA's annual Sabbatical Exhibition showcases diverse works completed by faculty members who were on sabbatical during the 2002 -- 2003 academic year. Faculty members for the 2003 exhibition include Annet Couwenberg, Chair of MICA's fiber department and co-chair of sculpture and general sculptural studies; Dan Dudrow, painting faculty member; Jane Elkinton, art history faculty member; Barry Nemett, painting faculty member; and Carole Poppleton, director of MICA's writing studio.

Maryland Institute College of Art's annual Faculty Exhibition showcases work by more than forty members of the faculty in a wide range of media. The faculty at Maryland Institute College of Art is comprised of some of the country's most productive and influential artists, and MICA's annual Faculty Exhibition is a rare opportunity to see the range, depth, and diversity of their talents. Departments represented include Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Photography, Fiber, Ceramics, Sculpture, Graphic Design, and Illustration.

WARREN LINN: SOLO EXHIBITION Saturday, October 18 -- Sunday, November 9 Pinkard Gallery -- Bunting Center (1401 West Mount Royal Avenue)Reception: Friday, October 24 from 6 -- 8 p.m.

Warren Linn has exhibited and produced illustrative work for major magazines, newspapers, recording packages, and corporate clients since 1968. He illustrated the children's book Happy Birthday Frankie by Sarah Weeks and completed a 156-foot mural for CBS Records. He has exhibited work in gallery venues over his entire career, working comfortably in both the fine and applied art realms. Warren Linn joined MICA's full-time illustration faculty in 2001.

The annual Juried Undergraduate Exhibition at MICA allows the public to see the College's best of the best, from every department and undergraduate class year. During the reception, the identities of the curators for the exhibition are disclosed and students whose artwork is featured in the exhibition receive awards.

Grace Hartigan: Painting Art History features Grace Hartigan's "art history paintings," specifically inspired by works from Hartigan's interests in art of the past. The director of MICA's Hoffberger School of Painting, Hartigan is an internationally acclaimed painter whose work is consistently recognized for its ability to "engage the human condition." She is acknowledged as one of the leading artists of abstract expressionism.

THE FABLES OF JEAN DE LA FONTAINE Friday, November 14 -- Sunday, December 14 Meyerhoff Gallery -- Fox Building (1303 West Mount Royal Avenue)Reception: Friday, November 14 from 6 -- 8 p.m.

French caricaturist, painter, and sculptor, and cutting political and social satirist Honore Daumier and six of his friends started a project in 1855 to document Jean De La Fontaine's fables (many of which are familiar due to Aesop), but the project was never realized. Curated by Koren Christofides, The Fables of Jean De La Fontaine showcases the work of more than 80 artists from around the world who picked up the project where Daumier left off. Each artist has chosen a fable, diptych, or triptych and recreated an artwork on an 8 1/2" x 11" wood panel.

BABBLE LAB Friday, November 14 -- Sunday, December 14 Pinkard & Student Space galleries -- Bunting Center (1401 West Mount Royal Avenue)Reception: Friday, November 14 from 6 -- 8 p.m.

Babble Lab is a collaboration between artists Wu Wing Yee and Henrik Drescher in an ongoing exploration of the creative process. During an artists' residency at the College this fall, Yee and Drescher will lead MICA students in exploring an assigned idea or question and recording information through making pictures, forms, objects, and writings in" idea bibles" (handmade notebooks). The artists and students will them generate work on that theme or question. Yee's and Drescher's works will be showcased in the Pinkard Gallery. The exhibition in the Student Space Gallery presents the students' works. Yee and Drescher previously did this project in Goungzhou, China and Dali, Yunan, China. Maryland Institute College of Art celebrated its 175th anniversary in 2001 and has consistently been named among the nation's very top visual arts colleges. In addition to its academic standing, MICA is recognized throughout the Baltimore/Washington region as a cultural resource, sponsoring many public and community-outreach programs, including exhibitions, artists' residencies, film series, lectures, readings, and performances. Public programming at MICA will expand with the opening of Brown Center in 2003-2004, which features a performance space especially designed to feature work in digital media.
