POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y., March 9, 1998-- Vassar College announces the fifteenth annual Institute of Publishing and Writing: Children's Books in the Marketplace, to take place on the Vassar campus June 14 to 19.

For well over a decade the Institute has celebrated the success of its participants by continuing to promote excellence in the writing, editing, production, and illustration of children's books. Coming together for dialogue and exchange, top working professionals from the industry share with each student their experience and expertise - tips and current information from the market.

Highlighting the six-day institute will be a special events day on Friday, June 19, that will include a panel discussion moderated by artist's representative Dilys Evans, a keynote speech by Selma G. Lanes titled "Surfing the 20th Century and a Crystal Ball Peek into the 21st," and a luncheon. Ms. Lanes, a renowned critic, lecturer, and editor is also the author of Down the Rabbit Hole, Adventures and Misadventures in the Realm of Children's Literature, a collection of critical essays, and The Art of Maurice Sendak.. The panel, titled "Whose Book is this Anyway? The Artist's Role," will include published alumnae and alumni who have attended the Institute over the past fourteen years.

Workshops from Sunday to Thursday will concentrate on the editorial, production, and marketing processes; writing fiction and nonfiction for all ages; creating the picture book; and selling work to the trade markets.

Speakers and workshop leaders include award-winning authors Nancy Willard, Mary Jane Auch, and Margery Facklam; artist Jill Kastner; Regina Griffin, vice president and editor-in-chief of Holiday House; and Claire Counihan, associate art director at Morrow Junior, the children's book division of William Morrow.

Daily morning critique sessions of writing samples prepared by participants will be conducted by Barbara Lucas, director of the Institute, and co-instructors Margery Facklam and Mary Jane Auch.

All activities will take place on the scenic Vassar campus, located in the mid-Hudson Valley, 75 miles north of New York City. Enrollment is limited; the registration deadline is May 1. The cost of the Institute is $800 for tuition and room and board. Limited enrollment is available for the Friday special events day.

Registration deadline is May 1, 1998. For further information about the full program or special events day, call Maryann Bruno, associate director of college relations (914) 437-5903, or e-mail [email protected].
