FINANCIAL SUPPORT, ACCOUNTABILITY IN PUBLIC HIGHER EDUCATION TOPIC OF UGA CONFERENCE

ATHENS, Ga. -- The University of Georgia will host a two-day conference titled "Accountability and Financial Support of Public Higher Education," Wednesday, May 31 - Thursday, June 1, at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. Roy Barnes and James F. Hunt, Jr. governors of Georgia and North Carolina, respectively, are among those who will participate in the event.

The conference is sponsored by UGA's Institute of Higher Education in conjunction with the Commission of Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the Southern Regional Education Board.

"This conference of educational and political leaders will focus on accountability in higher education versus the need for higher education to remain independent and free from political interference," said Edward Simpson, a Distinguished Public Service Fellow in the Institute of Higher Education and organizer of the conference.

Former Georgia governor Zell Miller, now a UGA faculty member, will deliver one of the conference's two keynote addresses at a 1:45 p.m opening day session. Miller, a UGA graduate, is a Distinguished Professor of Higher Education and holds the first Philip H. Alston Jr. Chair. James T. Rogers, executive director of SACS's Commission of Colleges, will deliver the other keynote address immediately following Miller's speech.

Several presidents and chancellors of public institutions from around the world will also be in attendance at the conference. Included in those scheduled to participate are John Casteen, president of the University of Virginia; Geoffrey Thomas, president of Kellogg College at the University of Oxford; and Charles R. Nash, vice chancellor for academic affairs of the University of Alabama System.
