The First National Workplace Napping Day is April 3, 2000:
BU Professor Advocates Napping at Work to Regain Lost Hour of Sleep and Productivity

(Boston, Mass.) - Mark your calendars! Boston University Professor William Anthony and his wife, Camille, co-authors of The Art of Napping at Work (Larson), have declared April 3, 2000, National Workplace Napping Day. Join the Anthonys' and companies across the nation as they "celebrate" the health and financial benefits of workplace napping.

"It is time to plan ahead for the lost hour of sleep that occurs with daylight-saving time," says Anthony, who also serves as Director of the Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation at BU. Anthony encourages employers and employees to "promote a 20-minute workplace nap and experience the amazing effect it has on productivity, alertness and well being."

Several organizations that are seeing the light and deciding to turn it off on April 3 are:

-- Yarde Metals of Bristol Connecticut, celebrating National Workplace Napping Day with a "company-wide" nap break, equipped with sleep masks and a guest violinist to encourage employees to nod off.

-- "napathons" happening at Qualife in Denver and William and Mary in Virginia.

-- Union Pacific (railroad), OP Contract (office furniture), Carpe Diem (creator of children's games) and Gould Evans Goodman (architectural firm) are all companies that are supporting workplace napping this April 3.

"Declaring National Workplace Napping Day is our way of showing our support for a nap break during the work day," says Camille Anthony. "Instead of your usual break activity, join us in a 20-minute workplace nap and experience the many benefits."
