Newswise — Your favorite dog or cat need not go hungry or miss a key vaccination, thanks to a new app created by the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University.

The app is called CU-PetHealth and is available for $3.99 from the iTunes store. It designed to function on both the iPhone and the iPad. CU-PetHealth shows a pet owner the proper amount to feed a canine or feline companion based on age, weight and other factors; and it even reminds a human caretaker when it’s time for a pet’s vaccinations.

“The idea came from a class project about designing a way to manage your pets health via smartphone technology,” said Joe Wakshlag, assistant professor at Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine. “iPhone is what everybody was using as far as the students were concerned. They felt they could reach more people through the iPhone and the iPad.”

Proper nutrition and medical care will improve the life of a cat or dog, just as it does for a human. America’s canines and felines share their human friends’ problems with nutrition and obesity.

“Nutrition is an ever-growing concern for pets,” Wakshlag said. “The CDC says that America has become ‘obesogenic,’ meaning we live in a world that promotes increased food intake, unhealthy food choices and reduced physical activity. Our pets live in the same world and are suffering the same consequences.”
