Former White House Press Secretaries to Square Off in NH

The race for the White House, the New Hampshire Primary (past and present) and working with the national media will be among the topics explored by Marlin Fitzwater and Mike McCurry Monday November 8th as Franklin Pierce College hosts the duo in a good-natured evening of opposing political sides.

The former press secretary for Presidents Reagan and Bush, Fitzwater is a trustee of the private liberal-arts college, located in Rindge, N.H. McCurry, President Clinton's former press secretary, will join his friend in the collegial showdown, marking the one-year countdown until Election Day, 2000.

Franklin Pierce College is the site of the new Marlin Fitzwater Center for Communication, an education and research center scheduled for completion in 2000.

The November 8th event will take place off campus at 5:00 p.m. in nearby Peterborough, N.H., at the Peterborough Town House. Fitzwater and McCurry are scheduled to offer presidential anecdotes, provide timely political analysis, engage in discussions of current campaign issues and take part in light-hearted partisan debate.

The presentation is part of the college's "Leaders of Conscience" speaker series, which has also included artists and business leaders. Franklin Pierce dedicates a central part of its undergraduate experience to character- and leadership-based education, and has won several national awards for its curricular focus. "Our purpose is to prepare leaders of conscience for the next century," says Dr. George J. Hagerty, president of the college, "whether our graduates' aspirations are global or local."
