Dougharty has both private college and public university experience in working with college students’ transitions, lifestyles, and issues. He offers five tips on helping parents and students make the transition to college. Dougharty oversees Grinnell’s student and professional staff in residence life and housing, student activities, international and multicultural student services, academic support, career development, health and counseling services, and campus security.

Joyce Stern, dean of student academic support and advising, Grinnell College. Stern and her staff assist students with time management, organization and planning, test preparation and study strategies, choosing a major, and obtaining accommodations for learning or physical disabilities. She offers five tips for academic success.

Jean Smiley Ketter, professor of education, Grinnell College; Ph.D., University of Kansas. Ketter served on a task force appointed by the National Council of Teachers of English to critique the design and use of SAT and ACT writing tests. Her published scholarly research has focused on promoting critical multicultural approaches to teaching literature in rural classrooms, writing instruction, and the ethics of high stakes writing assessment.

David Lopatto, professor of psychology, Grinnell College; Ph.D., Ohio University. Lopatto conducts “research on research,” examining the effectiveness of student-faculty research. He recently published a book with Research Corporation about science pedagogy and the importance of personal development, including the growth of independence, self-confidence, and tolerance for obstacles in undergraduate research experiences.
